Note - this is a Seasonal Activity!
Living Willow sculpture can only be planted during the winter period when the willow is dormant - usually December, January, February and March. April is sometimes suitable, but it does depend on whether spring has sprung!
Sculptures need a chance at putting down root growth before the leaves start and need at least a month to establish before the sun and warm weather stress them.
Tunnel and seating area added to the previous year’s willow dome for a school. Karen worked with 4 classes for a day, the children made the holes, planted the willow and wove the structure. (Below, l & r)
The difference a summer makes! A section of the tunnel sculpture for Jacksdale Community Garden, newly planted and 3 months later. (L,R)
Living Willow structures are a great way to add interest, colour and an activity space to your school field, garden, allotment or park.
We work with community groups and school classes to enable them to take part in building their own outdoor classroom, play space, tunnel or living fence. Willow play domes provide cool green leafy shelter in the summer and we can return the following winter to teach you how to maintain your structure. The Jacksdale Community garden sculpture (above, right) was built by Karen and Moira Forsyth over 3 days.
