During a two week long Living History event during 2013 a low, partly buried brick wall began to suffer an accelerated rate of damage. The wall crosses a natural line for pedestrian traffic and bricks were being dislodged as people stepped over them. We were asked to carry out emergency repairs to the vulnerable brickwork and consolidation of the exposed elevation.
We removed the failed mortar with hand tools before deep filling and repointing with a lime mortar which we closely matched to the historic mortar above ground in the same wall. The detached bricks were carefully cleaned and re-bedded in their original positions in the wall, keeping the weathered faces clean of mortar.
